This old town house was refurbished to enable a traditional way of urban life shifting emphasis to its outdoor spaces. The courtyard in the front encompasses a small garden and a patio for everyday family meals and lounging while the bigger terrace on top was designed with pergolas and outdoor siittng to facilitate larger family celebrations and feasts. Some of the housework is performed here as well (laundry and drying, etc). Finishing materials on both the external and internal surfaces were chosen vintage. The old lightings were kept. The kitchen and bathroom were remodelled to follow the same aesthetic.
This spacious apartment was renovated to host a small family. The owner desired a touch of luxury and therefore glossy and ornate materials (marbles-mirrors) were used to redefine two new structures within the big living room. Both the fireplace and bar were redesigned to support marble casing. The bar structure was covered with onyx that was lit from inside to provide a luminous effect.
The apartment although large in plot was divided into small rooms. One of them was expanded to take in the couple and the adjacent was arranged as a walk in closet. Bathrooms and the kitchen were refurbished using similar materials and finishings.
The transformation of this luminous extension space into a photo studio was created to contain the photographic talent of its owner. For that, new storage spaces were created to facilitate needs for archiving and photo supplies. They were made from glossy and reflective materials such as lacquer finish and colored glass in dark shades. Thus to provide the ideal background for the luminous displays and bring forward the photos’ details. The rest of the space was completed with the addition of a small comfortable client sitting and a fully equipped desk for photo editing
The project is the conversion of an old cement foundation into a vacation house for a 3-member family. The office started planning and construction at the plastering phase. The brief called for maximum utility of spaces in the inside while forming the outside in subsidiary levels. The main concept was planning for comfort while bringing the summer dwelling on to the outside. Adapting to the landscape was essential and therefore was treated with the use of natural finishing materials and earthly tones.
The plot is on a slope and the initial bearing structure was placed deep into the landscape. That gave an easy access to the terrace which was formed in two levels to take advantage of the surrounding views. An elevated deck was constructed to support outside dining and formed fixed sitting arrangements to host family gatherings. The deck is fitted under a tent pergola with side wings to control shading throughout the day and provide different spots for relaxation. In a parallel order, a small garden was arranged on the terrace to host bedding plants for shading in the future and further adaptation to the landscape. The main concept for the outside design was found in the disposition of materials with different opacities to define separate living spaces and allow for scenery viewing. The main volume of the house was covered with natural stone.
Internally, the original plan was preserved. The absence of a transitional space from the living room to the bedrooms and bath gave the opportunity to treat the partition wall as a whole. Construction planks were used to form a wooden lining that covered both wall and doors and fit the hidden lighting for the living room. Wooden cabins on beaches inspired this “wooden wall with doors” and gave a feeling of continuity. Bedrooms were treated chromatically according to age criteria. For the internal finishings ceramic tiles were used for easy care during the summer. They resemble concrete and natural wood so to fit the main concept of the house.
Two seperate residences with typical layout. Three bedrooms hosted on the upper floor while entrance, living room and kitchen area are located on the ground floor. In -1 level are the guest house and parking. Gardens on different levels accomodate all floors respectively. Plans took into consideratoin the view and north-south orientation.
